What to Look for When Choosing a Roofing Company

A quick guide for homeowners…

Are you seeing water stains on your ceiling, finding shingles in your yard, or hearing critters in your attic? These are all signs that you may need a new roof… which means you have to find a reputable roofing company.

Choosing the right roofing company is crucial, but not everyone has the experience or qualifications to ensure the job is done right. Here's a guide to help you choose the right roofing company for your needs.

Certifications, Licenses, and Local Bylaws
A qualified roofing company should comply with licensing policies and have the proper certifications. Here are some of the qualifications and certifications that are required for roofers in Ontario.

  • Working at Heights Training — This is a mandatory training program that all construction workers must complete in Ontario. It covers the proper use of fall protection equipment and other safety procedures that are necessary when working at heights.
  • Certified Roofing Contractor (CRC) designation — This is issued by the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA).
  • ShingleMaster Certification — This credential, issued by CertainTeed, represents the highest standards of excellence, quality and knowledge in the shingle roofing industry.
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship — Roofers in Ontario can complete an apprenticeship program through Skilled Trades Ontario to gain practical experience and learn the skills needed to become a professional roofer. The apprenticeship program typically takes three to four years to complete and includes both on-the-job training and classroom instruction.
  • Licenses — In Ontario, roofers are not required to have a specific license to work as a roofer. However, they may need to obtain a business license or permit from the local municipality depending on the type of work they are doing.

Be sure to look for a company that takes measures to ensure their workers are properly trained in installing particularly precise roofing materials, such as Euroshield. It's also important to ensure the company complies with local bylaws and regulations.

Insurance and Safety Record
Your roofing company should carry insurance to help protect your home from accidental damage and protect you from liability should someone be injured while on your property.

Ask your roofer what general liability insurance they have. If they don’t have any insurance, it's best to look elsewhere.

It's also important to consider the company's safety record and if they comply with OSHA regulations. This covers a variety of topics, including the following:

  • First aid — Having first aid kits, eyewash stations and other pertinent first aid supplies and equipment available.
  • Personal protective equipment — All personnel should wear hard hats and proper footwear while on the roof.
  • Safe operation of tools & equipment — Employees need to be familiar with the tools and equipment to do their job. This includes using safety harnesses and having multiple anchor points to prevent a swing-fall hazard.
  • Transportation of employees — If employees are being transported to the worksite, it must be done in accordance with the transportation act of Ontario.

Warranty & Policies
A new roof will protect your house for years to come, but one bad winter can damage a few shingles if they’re not properly installed. It's important to check the roofing company's warranties and guarantees to ensure your investment is secure.

Be sure to ask your roofing contractor what their warranty covers and whom to call should a problem arise. At Horizon's, we offer a limited lifetime warranty to ensure your investment is protected. In addition, we also provide The Horizon’s Roofing Promise to put your mind at ease.

  • Prompt Response — We’ll get back to you! Your phone calls will be responded to within one business day.
  • Professional Crews — Expect uniformed staff who are both courteous and knowledgeable.
  • No Mess — All debris will be removed daily and no large bins or other eyesores will be left on your property.
  • Nothing Exposed Overnight — Your home should be protected. We promise to not leave anything exposed to the elements during our time on your property.
  • No Upset Neighbours — All neighbours will receive a door-hanger with our contact info, so in the rare instance an issue comes up, they can contact us directly.

Written Estimates
Your roofing contractor should provide a written estimate that includes an accurate description of the work to be performed and the costs involved. At Horizon’s, we provide free estimates so you can make an informed decision without risk.

Check Reviews
When hiring any kind of contractor, it's important to check what others have to say about them! Check Google reviews, HomeStars, or Yelp to see what other customers have experienced. At Horizon's, we're proud of our positive reviews and encourage our customers to leave feedback.
